Dr. Berning's areas of specialization include milk secretion and mastitis, as well as computer applications to communications and management. At Cal Poly, Dr. Berning serves as the Los Lecheros Dairy Club advisor. Her research interests focus on the immune response of the mammary gland to mastitis pathogens. Additionally, she is interested in analyzing milking practices and teat disinfectants that may lead to reduced incidence of mastitis and reduction of antibiotic use in the dairy operation. Her hobbies include traveling, basketball, and horses.

DSCI 230 General Dairy Husbandry (4) GEB F.2. Selection, breeding, feeding, and management of dairy cattle. Composition and food value of dairy products. Milk pricing, political influences, dairy industry statistics and opportunities. Producing and handling dairy products. For non-Dairy Science majors. 3 lectures, 1 laboratory.
DSCI 321 Lactation Physiology (3) Mechanisms
of milk component secretion, including protein, lactose and fat synthesis.
Disorders of the mammary gland (mastitis) and appropriate management practices
for mastitis control.
3 lectures. Prerequisite: DSCI 101, DSCI 121, ZOO 131, CHEM 121.
DSCI X350 Dairy Industry Communications (3) Techniques
necessary for production of commercial publications such as brochures, pamphlets
and longer publications. Students produce an annual publication, utilizing
skills learned in computer graphics generation, desktop publishing, technical
and creative writing. 3 activities. Prerequisite: AG 250,
DSCI 121, ENGL 114, or consent of instructor.
