History of the Academy
Founded in 1977, the Art Academy offers unique programs in design, drawing, painting, and photography, with emphasis on creative expresion. Classes are small, taught by working artists from the front ranks of the art community. The programs combine studio-intensive training with special-focus workshops and independent use of facilities. Located on a tree-lined bluff overlooking the bay - just 15 minutes from downtown - the Art Academy offers its students easy access to galleries, museums, and lively cultural events.
Application Information
Class size is kept small to ensure that each student has access to equipment and ample opportunity to work with instructors. The Art Academy fills introductory classes and special-focus workshops by lottery. Admission to advanced classes is based on a jury system, using interviews and slides of applicants' work.
Admission Guidelines
Admission to the Art Academy is by application only. Advanced classes also require a set of five 35mm slides and descriptive information of the applicant's work. Final selection for advanced classes is determined by an interview with a panel of artists.
