A calculator or computer can not only be a useful tool to save time and check arithmetic, but also to do calculations, draw pictures, and make explorations which would not be manageable otherwise.  However, you should not become overly dependent on your calculator or computer.  There are basic skills in calculus which we believe you should be able to carry out "by hand."  Thus, exams will be exclusively calculator-free. If this makes you uneasy, know that I will never willingly ask you any test question that would be unreasonable without a calculator. Exams are designed to see if you understand the concepts and applications; if you get an A on an exam, then I have no doubt that technology will only enhance your ability to put the material to efficient, responsible use out in the "real world"!
