Instruments & Materials

You probably own most of the following instruments and materials from your first year studio courses. Buy additional instruments only as they are needed. The drawing instruments should last you for years and be used in many of your courses at Cal Poly. Purchase ones that feel good to you and are of the best quality that you can reasonably afford. Brands noted in the list are provided as references. Any brand that does the job and is satisfactory to you is acceptable.

Books

The following books will be used as references for most of the year in one form or another. They are all great for your own personal library. If your book budget is very tight, I suggest that you get DESIGN DRAWING first and add the others later.

Adams, CONCEPTUAL BLOCK-BUSTING

Ching, ARCHITECTURE: FORM, SPACE AND ORDER

Crowe and Laseau, VISUAL NOTES

Hertzberger, LESSONS FOR STUDENTS OF ARCHITECTURE

Koberg & Bagnall, UNIVERSAL TRAVELER

Laseau, GRAPHIC THINKING

Lockard, DESIGN DRAWING or DRAWING AS A MEANS TO ARCHITECTURE

Thiis-Evensen, ARCHETYPES IN ARCHITECTURE (currently out of print)

The following books you should be familiar with:
Alexander, PATTERN LANGUAGE
Le Corbusier, THE MODULOR
von Meiss, ELEMENTS OF ARCHITECTURE

If you want to know more about my specialty, Architectural Programming, you may want to buy my book: Duerk, ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAMMING: Information Management for Design; available at El Corral.
