12, Cruise 2003::
The
cruise on the TS Golden Bear is a once in a lifetime
opportunity anyone would be grateful to take. It took
me a long time to decide whether or not I would board
the ship, but I am so glad I decided to go for it. There
are so many pros about this trip and, of course, a few
cons, but overall, I can't express what an amazing trip
it was.
If you like to travel, like I do, this is your trip.
On the 2003 cruise, we stopped in 5 ports, and except
for 1, were able to stay for at least 3 days. It was
awesome to completely immerse ourselves in the culture
of each port.
Even while at sea, the experiences are incredible. Living
aboard a 500 foot ship for 2 months is an experience
in itself. To be able to wake up and see the sun rise
and then see it set followed by an amazing show of stars,
not to mention all the time in between, is awesome.
While at sea, you will be able to meet people you would
have never meet while on campus (the maritime academy
students). You will form great friendships with everyone
on board. You'll cry when it's over and want to keep
in touch with almost everyone you'll encounter. The
group will be incredible and diverse. And don't worry
about knowing anyone, I didn't, but still walked away
with incredible friendships.
One of the other pros will sound odd, but once you live
it you'll agree. The uniforms are a relief. They consist
of either khaki shorts/pants or jean shorts/pants and
a shirt purchased from CMA, along with mostly white
shoes. Not a very confining uniform at all. It actually
make it extremely easy to sleep late and not have to
worry about what you are going to wear. But don't worry,
once in port you don't have to wear your uniform.
Now the cons; every trip has them. The inspections and
cleaning sucks. But it's something you learn to live
with. The ship cleaning takes around 10 minutes and
if you keep up on your room, the room inspections just
require straightening of your room. CC is kitchen duty
and that is not a pleasurable experience at all. I had
to do it 3 times while aboard, so I just knew that 3
out of 60 days would suck. 1/20 of yucky days isn't
bad at all I felt, just something you have to do. The
thing I liked the least was lack of free time during
the day. Everything, including meals and classes, happens
at a certain time and not a moment after. In the evening
I had plenty of free time, but I would have liked more
during the day. But again, something you get used to.
Overall, there aren't any words that could describe
my time on this ship. I do know that nothing will compare
to it. I urge everyone to get aboard this ship. I believe
everyone should try it at least once; you won't regret
it, lord knows I don't. I can't tell you how glad I
am that I came. So pack light, bring lots of film, and
get ready for the best experience of your life.
