So
you're thinking about coming aboard the Training Ship
Golden Bear next year, huh? Hopefully this information
will help you make up your mind ... I'll be honest about
everything! First of all, let me just tell you that
this trip has been the most incredible thing I've ever
done in my life. I don't even have anything I could
compare to these past two months. The people, the ports,
living at sea, everything I've done has been amazing.
The trip is so much more than just the ports you get
to go to. I'll be honest, that's what I came for. But
I've enjoyed living at sea just as much as I did the
ports. Life aboard the TSGB is like nothing you've ever
experienced. You eat, sleep, and live with a few hundred
others within a five hundred foot space. At times this
can get slightly annoying, but for the most part I've
had no problems with it. Don't expect a lot of personal
space, though there is a lot more space in the rooms
than I expected. There are always people around and
always something going on.
Come here with an open mind and don't let the small
things bother you; they're not worth it, and there are
a lot of small things. The rules aren't as clear as
they could be, but ask a lot of questions and you'll
be fine. It can seem like you don't know what the rules
are until you've broken them. Basically, as long as
you're in uniform and you keep your room clean, you'll
be fine while on the ship. Uniforms are no big deal.
They cut down significantly on packing, which is nice.
Don't bring too much stuff. I packed like I was going
on a ten day vacation and that was about perfect. Don't
forget clothes to go out in while in ports. The food
isn't great, but the desserts make up for it. Mom is
wonderful! Expect cafeteria-style food, nothing more.
There is so much about this trip that you will absolutely
love. Things that you can't put into words, that you
just have to experience. I met some amazing people who
I'll be friends with forever. Watching the sunset, getting
up early for sunrise, having bbq's and dances on the
fantail, everything makes this experience unforgettable.
The ports were such a highlight on this trip. Research
them before you get here though, because three days
is not a long time and you want to cram as much into
them as you possibly can. Be prepared to get up early
and go to bed late, but know that it's well worth it.
I probably got three to four hours of sleep each night
we were in port. The days are full and then everyone
usually meets up somewhere for the night. This trip
is definitely an adventure, one that I'll certainly
never forget. I don't regret for one minute coming on
this trip; I've loved every minute of it. Keep an open
mind, have a sense of humor, and be ready for an adventure.
You'll have a blast.
