:: Letter 15, Cruise 2001 ::

Letter to Prospective Student,

As this year's cruise is coming to a conclusion I reflect upon the many experiences I have had over the past two months. I cannot believe the opportunities I have had nor the fun I have enjoyed. I never realized how much I would enjoy being on this 500 foot vessel as we crossed the Pacific Ocean. I always found myself wanting to enjoy outside more. Taking twelve units was the perfect amount. I was able to enjoy the ship and the trip, while going to school. The ports were the highlights. To visit far off places I had never been was wonderful. During these two months I met a number of individuals, both from Cal Poly and CMA. It was delightful to talk to everyone and share this experience. When I think of items that would have made my decision to come on this trip easier, I think it would be to know more about ship life. While on the Golden Bear there is a set schedule each day, except Sunday. During the day you attend classes, quarters, and clean sweep down. Clean Sweep Down is cleaning an assigned area along with other people in your group. Everyone is here to enjoy themselves, and they do. A couple of time during the cruise, you have to help with CC, which is kitchen duty. It isn't bad, just helping the other cadets assigned to CC with cleaning the mess deck. During the day it is nice to be outside, either getting a sun tan or watching for wildlife, or even both. In the evening, sunsets are nice to watch and stars are fun to look at. The occasional rain squall is fun to be in, and Sundays are nice because there is often a BBQ on the fantail. The only advice I have is if you think this is something you would be interested in and you have the opportunity - go for it! This is such a unique opportunity and a wonderful experience, I would come again.
