About Liberal Studies

The Liberal Studies major prepares individuals to be future teachers, primarily at the elementary level. The Liberal Studies Department is located in Building 53, Room 211.

The Liberal Studies Department alllows majors to take up to 4 units of major/support coursework for credit/no credit.

Information for LS Majors Applying to the Multiple Subject Credential Program at Cal Poly:

You are eligible to complete the Step A packet (acceptance into the Multiple Subject Credential Program will allow you to complete the Education method (Educ 430, 431, 435, 436) courses needed for the major and the teaching credential) once you are within 3-4 quarters of graduating.  If you are not planning to complete you credential here, see an advisor.

It is required that you attend a Step A meeting to learn how to appropriately complete your packet. This should ideally be done the quarter PRIOR to submitting your Step A packet.  For more information on the Step A process, please visit the School of Education website. CSM Advising Staff can only assist you in completing the Study Plan, Change of Degree and Emphasis Area. For all other questions regarding the Step A process, please contact School of Education by emailing: soe@calpoly.edu or by calling their office at 756-2126.

Students can submit Step A packet beginning the first day of school. The deadline to submit your STEP A packet to the Credential Office (Building 53, Room 211) is Monday of the 4th week of the quarter by 4:30 pm. No late packets will be considered.

Please bring your STEP A, or STEP B (if you are ready to begin student teaching Spring quarter) application forms to the meeting, along with any questions you may have. Both STEPs A & B application packets are available to download from the School of Education web site: www.soe.calpoly.edu, click on “forms and documents” and then “Multiple Subject.” If you previously downloaded a STEP A or B application, please download another application packet as changes to the applications have occurred over the winter break.

The Winter 2012 deadline for submitting your completed STEP A or STEP B application is 4:30 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 2012. They are to be submitted to the School of Education – Credential Office, in Building 53, Room 211 by no later than 4:30 PM. 

Please remember that we cannot accept partial application packets and that all course substitution requests must also be included in the packet.

For Blended Liberal Studies Students:
STEP A - Application to the Multiple Subject Program (PDF)

Before you can submit a Step A packet, you must have completed the following:

Liberal Studies Blended (07-09 and prior catalogs for Liberal Studies majors) requirements for STEP A admission to the MSCP:
  • Meet with an advisor in the College of Science and Math to complete three quarter study plan, emphasis statement and change of degree objective from BA to BS. Bring these forms (included in the Step A packet) to your scheduled appointment. To schedule an appointment, please contact the CSM Advising Center at 756-2615.
  • Apply for STEP A by Monday of the 4th week of the quarter by 4:30 pm. No late applications will be accepted!
  • Completion of all prerequisite courses
  • Completion of all four subtests of the CSET M.S.
  • Successful completion of the Professional Aptitude Interview (PAI)
  • Cumulative higher education grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.67 at the time of application.
    OR
    a GPA of 2.75 in their last 90 quarter units.
    (Note: Applicants with a GPA below both standards should contact the Multiple Subjects Coordinator at (805) 756-1503 as soon as possible.)

For Blended Liberal Studies Students: If you are about to complete a Step B application, you are about to begin the student teaching phase of the Multiple Subject Credential Program (MSCP). The Step B application is for both Student Teaching I (Educ 454/434) and Student Teaching II (Educ 456).
Step B -Multiple Subject Blended Program Application

Liberal Studies Integrated (09-11 catalog for Liberal Studies majors) requirements for STEP A admission to the MSCP:
  • Meet with an advisor in the College of Science and Math to complete three quarter study plan, emphasis statement and request to graduate form. Bring these forms (included in the Step A packet) to your scheduled appointment. To schedule an appointment, please contact the CSM Advising Center at 756-2615.
  • Apply for STEP A by Monday of the 4th week of the quarter by 4:30 pm. No late applications will be accepted!
  • Completion of all prerequisite courses
  • Completion of all four subtests of the CSET M.S.
  • Successful completion of the Professional Aptitude Interview (PAI)
  • Cumulative higher education grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.67 at the time of application.

For Integrated (09-11 catalog) Liberal Studies Students: If you are about to complete a Step B application, you must also apply through CSU Mentor to enter into the Multiple Subject Credential Program (MSCP) before you can begin the student teaching phase of the Multiple Subject Credential Program (MSCP). The Step B application is for both Student Teaching I (Educ 454/434) and Student Teaching II (Educ 456).
