The College of Science and Mathematics Advising Center has trained and knowledgeable advising staff who empower all students in the CSM community to achieve their unique educational goals by providing accurate and timely advice in a professional, welcoming and supportive environment.

Our professional advisors take a holistic approach to advising; assisting students in defining their academic, career and personal goals and helping students to create an educational plan consistent with those goals.

The CSM Advising Center services include assistance with scheduling classes, developing long-range academic plans, career advising, as well as informing students of their graduation requirements, and interpreting university and college policy and procedures. Advisors also serve as advocates and mentors to promote student success. Students are encouraged to seek advising early and often throughout their time at Cal Poly.

What we expect of you, the student

You are ultimately responsible for fulfilling all the requirements of the curriculum in which you are enrolled. Students share responsibility for a successful university experience and are expected to contribute to effective advising experiences by doing the following:

    • Take the initiative to meet with your academic advisor regularly and follow through with recommendations.
    • Be on time for your scheduled appointments and cancel or reschedule if necessary.
    • Be an active learner by fully engaging in the advising process.
    • Be prepared to discuss your goals and educational plans during meetings with advisors.
    • Keep and organize personal copies of all important documents relevant to your academic career and progress to degree.
    • Become knowledgeable of the university catalog, campus-/college-/major-specific academic policies and procedures, academic calendar deadlines and degree or program requirements.
    • Review your Degree Progress Report (DPR) each quarter and seek assistance to resolve any errors or questions in a timely manner.
    • Inform an advisor of any concerns, special needs, deficiencies, or barriers that might affect academic success.
    • Be open and willing to consider advice from advisors, faculty, and other mentors.
    • Accept responsibility for your decisions and your actions (or inactions) that affect your educational progress and goals.

      Faculty Advisors

Ten Great Reasons to See Your Faculty Advisor

Students in the College of Science and Math are assigned to a faulty advisor in their major department at the time of entry to the univeristy. Students are encouraged to seek academic/career advising from their department faculty. Contact your major department or the CSM Advising Center to obtain the name/contact information of your faculty advisor.

      Online Advising Resources

We encourage each student to take responsibility for their academic success. The first way to do this is to take time to learn about the academic and advising resources that Cal Poly has in place to assist you in your path to "finish on time".

      Degree Progress Report (DPR)

The Degree Progress Report (DPR) is an interactive advising tool that will provide you with an up-to-date assessment of your academic progress to graduation. It will indicate if you have met specific University degree requirements such as:

      • Units (minimum and upper division) required to earn your degree
      • GPA requirements (excluding major gpa) required
      • Residence unit requirement
      • The United States Cultural Pluralism (USCP) requirement
      • The Graduation Writing Requirement

It will also indicate what courses that you have completed or have yet to complete in the following areas:

      • General Education coursework
      • Major coursework
      • Support coursework (if required)
      • Concentration coursework
      • Minor coursework (if declared)
      • Course credits not used are courses that will count for elective credit or courses that have not yet been applied to any of the above categories*

One caveat: The DPR does not reflect transfer credit taken after entry to Cal Poly, nor does it reflect petitons that have been submitted to the Registrar's Office. This information will be applied at the time of degree posting at the end of your undergraduate academic career.

      To view your DPR:

Log in to your Cal Poly Portal >Select Student Center> Under Academic History, select Degree Progress>Select Degree Progress Report from the Drop Down Menu> Click GO> Select Expand All once the report has been generated.

      • Use the legend key at the beginning of the report to help you understand the status of your coursework.
        • Degree Audit Incons: These symbols indicate the status of the student's degree progress.
          • Green Circle -Requirement Satisfied
          • Red Square -Requirement Not Satisfied
          • Yellow Triangle -Course In Progress
        • Course Enrollment Codes: These codes indicate the source of the credit. See Course History tab and External Credit tab within the DPR for your full history.
          • EN -Courses taken through enrollment at Cal Poly
          • TR -Courses transferred from another institution
          • TE -Test Credit
          • OT-Other Credit

Review courses you're enrolled in for the quarter (these courses will show as "In Progress" with a yellow triangle)

If you have Advanced Placement Credit, review how your credit has been applied towards your Major/Support/Genereal Education or Course Not Used.

To declare your concentration and/or minor:

*Note: The DPR will not reflect information that has not yet been provided to the Office of the Registrar-Evaluations unit.  Once provided to them, allow at least a week for the information to be reflected in your Degree Progress Report.

To declare a concentration, send an email to evaluations@calpoly.edu with a subject line of "Concentration/Last Name."  In the body of the email, provide the following information: Name, Empl ID, Major, Catalog Year (i.e., 07-09, 09-11), the Concentration you wish to pursue. Make sure your concentration is available for the catalog you are following. For a minor, obtain the form and appropriate signatures from your minor department before sending the form to the Registrar's Office-Evaluations Unit in Building 1, Room 218.
