College of Science and Mathematics

I am so glad that you selected Cal Poly and the College of Science and Mathematics for your college education.  I have met many of you already and look forward to getting to know you this fall.  I want you to know that I deeply care about your growth and success, both personal and intellectual, and that my feelings are representative of the entire faculty and staff.  Don’t be shy about contacting me, our Advising Center, and faculty and staff members, especially as you adjust to your new surroundings and immerse yourself in the Cal Poly experience.

You can be proud that you are a Cal Poly student.  You are attending one of the nation’s very most selective public universities, one that has been recognized as the best, largely undergraduate, public institution in the west by US News and World Report for more than a decade now.

Our College of Science and Mathematics is one of the nation’s most prolific producers of science and mathematics graduates. The recent Research Corporation study of science programs at 1115 undergraduate universities (non-Ph.D.institutions) found Cal Poly third in number of science degrees awarded during 1985-1997.

The American Statistical Association ranks Cal Poly 13th in annual statistics degrees granted and third of non-Ph.D. institutions.  The National Science Foundation has previously recognized Cal Poly for innovative science programs and as an excellent source of students for Ph.D. programs.

I encourage you to participate in the entire Cal Poly experience, curricular and co-curricular.  Your efforts during your brief time at Cal Poly will influence the rest of your life.  I especially hope you will take your academic responsibilities seriously.  Please take a look at our web materials on academic success.  And please allocate 25-35 hours per week to studying for your courses.

I also want to ask you to be careful and to be concerned with your personal health and safety.  Please make sure you are sleeping, eating, and taking care of yourself.  When attending social events, make sure you are in control of yourself and that those around you are in control of themselves.  Please examine your personal priorities and see that they are consistent with your academic responsibilities.
