About Dean Bailey

Dean Phil Bailey
Phil Bailey is Dean of Cal Poly’s College of Science and Mathematics and a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He joined the faculty in 1969 after earning bachelor's and doctorate degrees in chemistry from The University of Texas (Austin) and Purdue University respectively. He became associate dean in 1973, dean in 1983 and was Interim Vice-President for Academic Affairs in 1989-90. He is the senior science dean in the California State University and probably the senior member of the actively employed Cal Poly community in years of service. He has taught almost every term during his more than 43 years at Cal Poly.
Dean Bailey and his wife Dr. Christina Bailey, Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, are co-authors of a number of books including Organic Chemistry, A Brief Survey of Concepts and Applications (Prentice Hall, 6th Edition; English, Spanish, Japanese, Korean). In addition to this strictly scholarly work, the Baileys have performed Chemistry Magic Shows for over 125,000 people and have published 30,000 copies of a professional DVD of the presentation.
Dean Bailey has received numerous accolades throughout his career. As an assistant professor, he received the Advisor of the Year award from the Associated Students Incorporated. The Disability Resource Center honored him for outstanding support. At the spring 2010 Black Commencement Ceremony, the Black Faculty and Staff Association recognized the Baileys for their support of African-American students and other students of color. Also in 2010 Dean Bailey received the Provost’s Leadership Award for Partnership in Philanthropy. In April 2012 at the ninth annual African Goodwill Awards in Los Angeles, Dean Bailey received an Ambassador of Goodwill award for his support of African-American students and underrepresented students in general at Cal Poly. In May 2012 he was awarded the Faculty Excellence in Advising award from the California State Students’ Association (representing the California State University) for supporting student success and demonstrating compassion for underrepresented students.
The Baileys have four adopted, mixed race children, now grown. Over the years, more than 15 Cal Poly students of multicultural or multiracial background have lived with the Baileys, who have assisted them financially and otherwise in completing their college degrees. These are only a few among the many Cal Poly students they have assisted and mentored during their careers.
