Enhanced Science and Mathematics Teacher Education

Join College of Science and Mathematics
California and the nation are experiencing a crisis level shortage of qualified secondary school science and mathematics teachers. In addition, a recognized need exists to increase science and mathematics competency and confidence in elementary school teachers. Simultaneously, California projects a shortage of college graduates needed for the workforce, particularly in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
To enhance our efforts in teacher education, Cal Poly has merged the College of Science and Mathematics, School of Education, and the Liberal Studies program. We are in a special position to address STEM education issues:
We are a polytechnic institution with a learn by doing philosophy; science and mathematics is the foundation of our polytechnic curriculum.
We have smart students. Cal Poly is one of the most selective public universities in the nation.
Our Liberal Studies program focuses on educating elementary school teachers and has always had a strong science and mathematics curriculum as well as being exemplary in the liberal arts.
In recent years, the College of Science and Mathematics has recruited a dozen or so faculty members committed to science and mathematics education in an effort to increase its commitment to teacher education, both multiple and single subject.
The College of Education has been building a STEM emphasis into its existing programs including educational leadership and has a strong teacher credentialing component.
Cal Poly has an outstanding College of Liberal Arts to provide the arts and humanities education for future teachers.
And CESAME, the Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education, is guiding Cal Poly in state and national efforts to enhance science and mathematics teaching and learning as well as teacher education.
The vision for the merger: as a nationally respected polytechnic university, we have brought together all the players in teacher education with the goal of educating the very best science and mathematics teachers possible.
