What we do in Public Affairs

The Public Affairs Office handles media inquiries and requests for information about the university and its colleges and programs. The office also creates web sites and publications to promote information about the university.

The Cal Poly Public Affairs Office is part of Cal Poly's University Advancement Division, headed by Associate Vice President for Strategic Communications Chip Visci and Vice President for University Advancement Sandra Ogren.

Public Affairs staff respond to media requests and research and write university News Releases.

Public Affairs staff also research and write other university publications, including the Cal Poly News Web site, Cal Poly Magazine, and Cal Poly Update, the monthly e-newsletter for University friends, supporters, alumni and the general public.

Since December, 2009, Public Affairs has provided content (news items, news links, and photos) for the Cal Poly University Home Page at www.calpoly.edu.

PolyLink - Are you in yet?The department manages the News and University Photo Galleries sections of PolyLink, Cal Poly's free, private social network for alumni, faculty, staff and current seniors, and the Cal Poly Alumni Facebook Page.

Public Affairs also posts daily news on the Cal Poly News RSS Feed and on Twitter.

For the university community, the office also produces Cal Poly Report. Cal Poly Report is the weekly newsletter for campus faculty and staff.

Mustang sculpturePublic Affairs maintains a digital image gallery of campus photos and logos in web and print-ready formats on the Kennedy Library Digital Commons. The public portion of the gallery includes photos for media. There is a private "Insider Photos" gallery for Cal Poly employees needing photos and logos for official university publications. Employees can contact Public Affairs for the password to the insider gallery.

Cal Poly logos and wordmarks belong to the California State University System and may not be used by non-Cal Poly employees without permission from the university. Contact Public Affairs for questions about Cal Poly logo information.

Public Affairs also works with Information Technology staff to update campus news and campuswide announcements channels on the MyCalPoly portal.

The Public Affairs Office reviews all publications intended for off-campus distribution. And the department maintains the university's graphics standards and guidelines.
