Candidates must demonstrate competency in speaking English by earning a minimum grade of C OR BETTER (a C- is not acceptable) in one of the following courses: SPC 201, 202, 310; or by passing a speech competency examination administered by the Speech Communication Department. Candidates may sign up (in person) for the examination at the UCTE Student Information Center, Building 02, Room 120.
Candidates must demonstrate writing competence through one of the following three options:
(1) Pass the Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE). A score of 8 or better is considered passing. Candidates may sign up for the examination at Cal Poly s Cashier s Office. An information sheet will be provided by the Cashier s Office.
(2) Receive a grade of C or better (a C- is not acceptable) and certification of Writing Proficiency from the instructor in one of the following upper-division writing courses: ENGL 301,302,310, 318, or 326.
(3) Receive a grade of C or better (a C- is not acceptable) and certification of Writing Proficiency from the instructor in one of the following upper-division literature courses: ENGL 330, 331, 332, 333, 334, 335, 338, 339, 340, 341, 342, 345, 346, 350, 351, 352, 353, 355, 370, 372, or 380.
Competency must have been demonstrated within seven years of the date of application for STEP I, and no later than one quarter prior to application for STEP II.
