Course description: Having learned about a set of basic tools (limits, differentiation, integration, etc.) in Calculus I and II, we now explore a higher level of techniques, including parameterizations, sequences, series, three-space, and vector functions. As well as being valuable (and interesting!) in their own right, these concepts really set the stage for Calc IV.

Course home page: Blackboard on my.calpoly.edu (or go directly to http://www.calpoly.edu/~brichert/teaching/143/143-13.html).

Text: James Stewart, Calculus, 5th edition, Brooks/Cole Publishing, 2003.

Syllabus: We will be working through chapters 1-5 of Stewart's Calculus in this course.

Prerequisites: Math 142.

Reading: Students are expected to read the section of the text to be covered on a given day before the lecture. You can find the section number for a given day under the Homework tab on Blackboard (or go directly to http://www.calpoly.edu/~brichert/teaching/143/homework13.html

Grades: Grades will be based on homework (online and written), two midterms, and a cumulative final exam--each component counting for 25% of your final score. In the computation of your grade, the lower of your two midterm scores will be replaced by the score you received on the final, if that will improve your standing.

Homework: Homework is due twice a week---those problems assigned Monday and Tuesday will be due on Thursday, while those assigned Wednesday and Thursday will be due the following Tuesday. Your lowest homework score will be dropped and therefore no late homework will be accepted. Each homework assignment will consist of two components, an online component and a written component. The online homework is your chance to practice some of the basic skills of the course in a forum that provides instant feedback pertaining to those basic skills. The written component gives you a chance to learn by doing in a more comprehensive manner: you will use the basic tools of calculus to solve problems and communicate your solutions. Overall, the online portion of the homework is worth 9% of your final grade, while the written portion is worth 16% (totalling to 25%). You can find the current homework assignment under the Homework tab on Blackboard, (or go directly to http://www.calpoly.edu/~brichert/teaching/141/homework02.html).

Exams: There will be two in-class exams and one cumulative final. Exam 1 is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, February 2nd. Exam 2 is tentatively scheduled for Monday, March 1st.. No makeup midterms will be given. The final will be held from 1pm - 4pm, Monday, March 15.

Furlough Days: Cal Poly faculty are required to take six furlough days during the Winter quarter. This will result in the cancellation of lecture and office hours on 1/19, 2/8, 2/16, and 3/8.
