Cal Poly Biotech Club
Club Profile
The Biotech Club is a student organization associated with the Biological Sciences Department of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. We are open to all
majors, but the majority of our members are majoring in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, or Biochemistry.
Meetings
During the academic year, we meet for one hour every other Thursday at 11:10am (University Union hour) in Building 33 Room 287.
Our meetings consist of various speakers relating to biotechnology related fields. This includes biotechnology of industry, research, health, and agricultural. Occasionally we will have Cal Poly faculty speak on behalf of their research and opportunities available for students. Look for posters outside of Fisher Science indicating our meetings and featured speaker. We will also usually have free pizza, some, come enjoy!
In addition, club members are involved in the Biology Department tutoring that is under the direction of Tri-Beta.
Field Trips
Throughout the school year we try to organize as many field trips to biotechnology related companies as we can. Past tours include Microbiology Lab at Fresh Hospital, Baileyana Winery, MedImmune, Promega, and Santa Cruz Biotechnology. Future tours include Genentech, Baxter, and Central Coast Pathology.
Club Memberships
Club dues are $10 per quarter or $30 for the year ($35 with club t-shirt). Club membership entitles you to discount prices on field trips, and
helps to pay for refreshments for our meetings. Dues also support special projects, such as the construction and maintenance of the informational
sandwich board and the club booth that is used for Open House.
Annual activities
- Open House is an outreach program in which club members share information about our club with prospective students. We also sell club T-shirts
and food.
- Biotech Industry Career Day is a Cal Poly event that our club co-sponsors with other student organizations on campus. The day consists of a panel
of biotechnology industry professionals answering questions about the industry and a career fair focused specifically on the scientific aspects of
biotechnology.
Join Us
By joining the biotechnology club, you will strengthen your resume for a career in microbiology or other related fields. If you are
interested in pursuing graduate studies, participation in club activities will enhance your application for graduate (M.S., Ph.D.) or professional
(M.D., D.V.M.) schools. Additionally, opportunities are provided through contacts with other SMB members and faculty to participate in
undergraduate research for your senior project.
