University Union Escape Route
As the name implies, the services offered by the ASI
Outings Escape Route can help provide your outdoor
getaway. Need equipment for a trip? The Escape
Route has low-cost rentals such as kayaks, backpacks,
sleeping bags, and tents which can be rented for the
weekend or a week. Planning a weekend hike? The
Escape Route also has maps, books, brochures and
information to help you plan your own excursions.
Knowledgeable people can also help set you up with
everything you need to make your trip more comfortable
and enjoyable.
In addition, the Escape Route
offers low-priced weekend trips sponsored by the ASI
Outings Committee. From beginning rock climbing
on Bishop's Peak to winter mountaineering on Mount
Shasta, Outings offers a variety of adventures for any
skill level. The Escape Route also provides a
computerized trip planning center. Why don't you come on by
and find your own Escape Route?

The Escape Route is located on the lower level of the
Julian A. McPhee University Union, Building 65,
room 112 (across from Second Edition).
The usual hours of operations are from 10 a.m. to
4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Route is closed on weekends,
during finals week, and during the quarter breaks.
Students, faculty, staff, alumni and spouses are all
encouraged to make use of the Escape Route, but must
present a valid campus ID or alumni card to rent any of
the equipment.
The Escape Route is run in
conjunction with the ASI Outings Committee. Clerks
check out the equipment, take sign-ups for the trips,
provide outdoor information, and answer questions
about the outings. Area Specialist Coordinators
provide a wealth of information on activities like caving,
cycling, backpacking and mountaineering. Trip
leaders are also volunteers who plan, organize and lead the

Come by the ASI Outings weekly meetings happening
every Tuesday night at 7pm in UU220 (Summer: UU219). There you will
hear all about past trips, new trips and other upcoming
Outings activities. All types of outdoor activities are
offered from backpacking to skiing trips, mountaineering
to afternoon barbecues and softball games to an
evening of ballroom dancing. Anyone may attend
these informal meetings which include a slide show and
lots of homemade cookies. Come on by and find out
how you can partake in or coordinate your own adventure!
The ASI Outings Committee publishes and distributes
helpful pamphlets called adventure tips. These tips
give some basic background information on such things
as canoeing, backpacking, rock climbing, bicycle tour-
ing, and sailing. Other tips include mileage charts,
information on weather in the west, and lists of day
hikes in San Luis Obispo County.
Located just outside the Escape Route's beautiful panoramic windows, the Climbing Wall provides instruction and practice in basic rock climbing techniques.
Classes range from ultra-beginner to vertical rescue
and all are only $5.00. Sign up in the Escape Route for
any of our weekly classes.
