Flag
and Insignia of Armenia
The
Flag (Yerakoun)
The
flag of the Republic of Armenia was confirmed on August
23rd 1990 by the Armenian Supreme Counsel. It is identical
to the first State flag of the Republic of Armenia
(1918-1920). The flag consists of three equal horizontal
stripes of red, blue and orange. Each color has its
own meaning and significance:
- Red
- Stands for the blood our brave ancestors shed
on the battle fields, fighting the enemy and sacrificing
their lives to save the Armenian nation from annihilation,
ensure their freedom to practice the Christian faith,
and up-hold the sovereignty and independence of
Mother-Land Armenia.
- Blue
- Stands for the color of the sky and its reflection
onto the waters of the rivers and lakes that give
life to this magnificent country of ours –
Armenia.
- Orange
- Stands for the natural resources and wealth
of this rich country, and the industrious nature
of the Armenian people.
The
Anthem of the Republic of Armenia
These
are the words of the Anthem in Armenian and English,
originally written by Mikael Nalbandian. This is a
modified version of the original anthem, which consisted
of five clauses. Some of the words have been changed
appropriately to reflect the freedom and independence
of the Republic of Armenia.
Every
Armenian should make the effort to learn and
commit to memory the words of their national anthem.
In honour of our ancestors who fought and shed their
blood to save this nation from annihilation.
