| Unlike many smaller programs, no one, single design
philosophy guides students through their academic career at Cal
Poly. Our faculty offer their students a variety of diverse ideas,
directions and philosophies. In the second through fifth year
design sequence, students work under the supervision of ten different
studio instructors. This helps to both broaden each student's
perspective while nurturing their individuality. In light of this
diversity of ideas and teaching methodologies, there remains at
Cal Poly a constant commitment to quality, comprehensive education. |
“In the United States, most state registration boards require a degree from an
accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting
Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit US professional degree programs in architecture,
recognizes two types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture and the Master of Architecture. A program may
be granted a six-year, three-year, or a two-year term of accreditation, depending on its degree of conformance
with established educational standards.
Masters degree programs may consist of a pre-professional undergraduate degree and a professional graduate degree; which,
whenearned sequentially, comprise an accredited professional education. However, the pre-professional degree is not, by
itself, recognized as an accredited degree.”
For further information, visit the NAAB website (http://www.naab.org).

Bachelor of Architecture:
The Architecture Department offers a Bachelor of
Architecture degree. This degree program, accredited by the National
Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB), is a five year "first professional
degree" program, a pre-requisite for licensing as a registered
architect in most states. The program is rigorous, lab oriented,
and sequential in nature. The program is imbued with a sense of
the applied and the practical without diminishing the importance
and time allotted to principle and theory. The fourth year offers
qualified students the opportunity for study abroad and for work
study programs in San Francisco or Alexandria, Virginia. The fifth
year is a selected year long project and final exhibit that salutes
the architectural creativity of each individual's extended research
and design. Graduates of the program are in high demand as are
undergraduates for summer internships. Cal Poly's Architecture
graduates consistently score among the highest in the nation on
the California Board of Architectural Examiners (CBAE) licensing
exam. For a complete listing of courses required for the BArch
degree, click

Specializations:
Architectural Management Track:
With only one additional year of study, this undergraduate
track allows architecture students to complete both a
professional Bachelor in Architecture, and a Master in
Business Administration. Courses are structured in a way
that allows many of the Architecture fifth year courses
to count toward the MBA degree. Students who have followed
this track have found it extremely challenging, but are
appreciative of the business skills gained and the increased
opportunities that result from continuing to complete
the MBA. For more details click
