I earned the BSEE from Wichita State University in Kansas and then joined IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. This was after being married for close to two years and with our first, almost year old, daughter (not necessarily something I recommend young people should do today). At the risk of making myself appear ancient, my entry salary at IBM was around seven thousand dollars-don't feel so sorry for us however, we were able to purchase a good home within a year!
I had a very rewarding career with IBM, being a participant in the revolutionary S/360 and S/370 computer families. I was a co-author of the key non-linear circuit simulator used throughout IBM for designing electronic chips and boards. I also managed an advanced chip technology group for four years. IBM was also very good to my family and me. I obtained the MSEE from Syracuse University, and the PhD from the University of Florida in Gainesville with competitive IBM employee grants. I took a lot of Math courses as I am a hidden Math major. After more than fifteen years the entrepreneurship bug bit. My wife and daughters-now four in number-made the risky move to Silicon Valley to join a very small company of ex-IBM'ers. I now know how lucky we were as the company became Mentor Graphics, a successful Electronic Design Automation company. I grew to Vice-president and General Manager of a division. I have since run other small companies, helped start a couple, but none have come close to the Mentor Graphics success. I currently do consulting and have personally developed a couple of Internet products that are in various stages of marketing. Here's a Calculus version of Resume.
I am in excellent shape, in case the introduction left the impression I am feeble. My physical activities are running, mountain biking, and skiing. I have run marathons, with a best of 3:07 in the 1978 NY City Marathon. I race only occasionally now, but run (around 8:15 minute-miles) or bike an equivalent of 30 miles per week. If it were cheaper and less crowded, I'd ski most of the winter. Being from Cuba, I did not grow up skiing, but I really like it now after taking lessons about ten years ago. I also enjoy the less strenuous activity of camping in remote areas of the Sierra Mountains.
