What does the Heating Ventilation Air-Condition and Refrigeration industry do?
The Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC&R) industry is responsible for maintaining comfort for occupants in a building as well as supplying specific environmental conditions for a product or process (such as data centers and hospitals). What types of jobs are there in the HVAV&R industry?
- Sales
- Outside Sales Engineer: Outside sales engineers meet with customers directly to sell new equipment, service contracts, and modifications of existing systems. They also provide technical assistance to customers.
- Inside Sales Representative: Inside sales engineers sell equipment by means of telephone or correspondence and answers inquires for equipment or services. They also assist the outside sales engineers by drafting estimates and gathering information.
- Sales Manager: Sales managers are responsible for budgets, sales forecasts, supervision of sales force and quotations, maintaining and helping to determine company sales policy.
- Design-Specification
- Consulting/Design Engineer: A Consulting/Design Engineer is responsible for the selection, design, layout, and specification of mechanical equipment to meet end user requirements. He ensures that installations are made in accordance with instructions. Obtaining a Professional Engineering license is highly recommended.
- Design-Build
- Project Manager: Project managers are in charge of specific company projects. They are responsible for engineering design, materials control, on-site problem solving, and coordination with other companies on job-site.
- Job Foreman or Supervisor: The Job Foreman/Supervisor is responsible for assigning and supervising service personnel’s work. He arranges for required service materials as well as plans for regular servicing and maintenance.

- Estimator: An Estimator works with plans, specifications, and often existing site conditions in order to determine the material and labor requirements to prepare a bid for a job.
