EPT SCORE INTERPRETATIONS
The English Placement Test is a two-hour test (45 minute essay), which
assesses reading and writing skills necessary for success in college work.
It is required of all entering CSU students who will be taking freshman
composition courses and have not qualified for an exemption based on various
test scores or previous college coursework.
Students receive a series of scores: essay score--2-12 (8 is passing);
reading skills score--120-180; composing skills score--120-180. These scores
are then totaled and an average is presented to the student as a Total
Score. Rarely does a student score above T165. Cal Poly uses the T score to place students in the appropriate English
course.
The Cal Poly placement standards for completing the English Remediation Milestone are as follows:
-
T151-180: ready for English 134 or English 133: Both English 134 and 133 meet the University General Education Requirements in Area A1 (written communication). However, English 133 offers multi-lingual students an opportunity to continue working on essay writing with a special emphasis on improving grammar and expression. Instructors in English 133 will address specifically issues such as English verb tenses, verb/subject agreement, syntax, word choice and idioms which often give non-native writers difficulty. English 133 is not offered every quarter.
- T146-150: required to take 1-unit, English 103 (Writing Laboratory) and English 134 (Writing: Exposition) or English 133 (Writing: Exposition--ESL) concurrently.English 103 (Writing Laboratory) is a 1-unit, tutorial lab course which
requires 1 hour per week (To Be Arranged) in the University Writing Lab.
Students required to complete this remedial course with English 134 or 133
must earn credit in English 103 in order to pass the expository writing course.
T120-145:required to take at least one 4-unit, developmental writing course and present a passing portfolio in preparation for English 134 or 133. English 103 is also required for all students who complete the required 4-unit basic writing courses. The 4-unit remedial and developmental English courses offered
are English 102 (Basic Writing II), English 112 (English Paragraph
Development), and English 113 (Essay Writing). All the courses are graded
credit/no credit; English 112, and 113 are designed for the multi-lingual
student. To qualify for a college-level English course, students must
present a passing portfolio in addition to earning credit in the course.
Students whose portfolios have not reached freshman-level writing are
required to take additional basic writing coursework.
Students who do not satisfy this requirement by completing the English Remediation Milestone within their first year are subject to disqualification from the University.
