Cal Poly

YOU HAVE AN EPT REGISTRATION HOLD.

You cannot register for classes until you clear this hold.

University records indicate that you have not taken the English Placement Test (EPT), nor have you provided information to verify an exemption from it. The CSU English Placement Test Requirement states that ALL entering undergraduates must qualify for enrollment by scoring in an appropriate range on the EPT or by documenting an exemption from it.

Failure to comply before enrollment will result in a Registration Hold (enrollement block) and possible disenrollment from the University.

For more information about the EPT requirement, please visit the EPT homepage.

HOW DO I CLEAR THE REGISTRATION HOLD?

In order to clear your registration hold and enroll in classes, you must provide Cal Poly with evidence that you have qualified for an exemption or sign a contract indicating where and when you will be taking the EPT before classes begin. If you have taken the EPT, you should submit a copy of those scores to qualify for enrollment. Once you have established your EPT status, you will be permitted to register for classes.

Please review the information below to find out how to submit an EPT contract or how to submit proof of an EPT exemption or EPT scores so that you can clear your registration hold promptly.

HOW DO I DETERMINE IF I HAVE AN EXEMPTION?

You are exempt from the EPT if you can present proof of one of the following:

•  Placement in the “exempt” category on the Early Assessment of Readiness for College English taken in conjunction with the 11 th grade California Standards Test in English Language Arts

•  A score of 550 or above on the verbal section of the College Board SAT I Reasoning Test taken between April 1995 and January 2005

•  A score of 550 or above on the critical reading section of the College Board SAT Reasoning Test taken March 2005 or later

•  A score of 680 or above on the College Board SAT II: Writing Test taken between May 1998 and January 2005

•  A score of 24 or above on the ACT English Test taken October 1989 or later

•  A score of 3, 4, or 5 on either the language and Composition or Literature and Composition examination of the College Board Advanced Placement Program

•  Completion and transfer to the CSU of a college course that satisfies the CSU General Education requirement in English Composition, provided such a course was completed with a grade of C or better.

HOW DO I SUBMIT PROOF OF MY EPT EXEMPTION OR MY EPT SCORES?

If you qualify for one of the exemptions above, or if you have taken the EPT but your scores are not recorded at Cal Poly,

SUBMIT PROOF OF YOUR EXEMPTION HERE.

Complete the form, sign it, and send it to Cal Poly as indicated on the form. Be sure to include the proper documentation to prove your exemption.

HOW DO I SUBMIT A CONTRACT TO TAKE THE EPT BEFORE CLASSES BEGIN?

If you plan to take the EPT after the June CSU systemwide testing date which is the latest date to qualify for fall registration, you must submit an EPT Contract explaining where and how you will meet the EPT requirement before classes begin. The signed contract must be on record at the Cal Poly Writing Skills office before your registration hold can be cleared.

Please note the following conditions of the contract:

•  You must take the EPT prior to the start of fall quarter classes.

•  If you are unable to take the exam at a CSU near you, you must take the EPT at Cal Poly on Saturday, September 20, 2008.

•  Registration for the test is required. Students indicating they will test at Cal Poly will be automatically registered upon receipt of their EPT Contract. Students testing at other CSU locations must register at that location by the registration deadline. Please see the CSU guide containing Essential Information for the ELM and EPT to get information about test offerings at other campuses.

Students who fail to comply with this CSU Trustee Mandate before enrollment, may be disenrolled from the University.
