Dr. Besel joined the department in 2007. His areas of expertise include rhetorical theory, history, and criticism; environmental communication; science communication; media studies; and political communication. One of his current book projects, The World a Stage: Performance on Behalf of the Environment, co-edited with Dr. Jnan Blau, is currently under contract with Lexington Books and is forthcoming in 2012. He is also working with Dr. Bernard Duffy on a second book titled Green Voices: Nature and the Environment in American Public Address. His work has been published in a variety of books and journals, including Communication Theory; Environmental Communication: A Journal of Nature and Culture; Making Connections: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Cultural Diversity; and the Southern Communication Journal. In 2010, Dr. Besel was the department’s Teacher of the Year and recipient of the California Faculty Association’s Distinguished Educator Award.
