Welcome Message
Hello. I am Cornel Morton, Vice President for Student Affairs at Cal Poly State University. Through your review of the Division of Student Affairs website my colleagues and I invite you to learn more about the instrumental role the Division of Student Affairs plays in curricular and co-curricular experiences of students enrolled at the University. The many programs, services and activities offered by a talented and dedicated staff provide opportunities for the personal and collective development of students, staff and faculty in a diverse and engaged community.
Our mission and vision statements inspire us to create opportunities to realize collective greatness as an entire community through collaborative investments in each individual member. Our vision statement, "Investing in Greatness," defines a commitment to support and nurture the greatness that lies within each of our students and colleagues to make Cal Poly the best university American higher education can offer. The "ABLE" Pillars inform our strategic planning and embody the bedrock of our commitment, and express the fundamental principles that guide the Division of Student Affairs. They represent an appreciation for the "whole person" and provide the framework for the methods we use to fulfill our mission and achieve our vision. They are:
Advocating
Supporting student interests and issues by advocating, teaching, and empowering student self-advocacy and personal responsibility
Building collaborative relationships
Building collaborative relationships to create shared meaning and common purpose
Learning
Providing opportunities for students and staff to be involved, informed, continuous learners and engaged citizens
Enhancing opportunities and experiences
Cultivating quality services and programs tailored to student life that support academic and personal success
Together with our colleagues in the Division of Academic Affairs we are committed to the practice of integrating Student Affairs programs and services into the student’s total learning experience, both in, and out of, the classroom. Our commitment is to foster within each student an ethic of respect and responsibility for self and others in the community.
Within these pages you will find information and links to other programs and services in the University. These are illustrations of the broad and serious attention paid to student success and campus climate by Division staff and others throughout the University. I hope you will share your thoughts and suggestions related to our efforts to enhance student success.
The phrase, "Learn by Doing," captures an essential quality of a Cal Poly education. As a campus community we prepare students for diverse careers and challenge them to embrace a sense of accountability, belonging, respect for diversity, and commitment to social justice and intellectual freedom. We are proud of their accomplishments and take pride in the service and support of an outstanding and dedicated staff.
Please enjoy your time learning more about the Cal Poly Division of Student Affairs.
Dr. Cornel N. Morton
