CSU Student Research Competition

Information for Cal Poly Colleges and Faculty Advisors

The 27th Annual CSU Student Research Competition will be held at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona on May 10-11, 2013.

Procedures for Nominating Students to the CSU Research Competition

  • A campus may deliver a maximum of ten presentations at the system-wide competition. Only those submissions selected by the Academic Senate Grants Review Committee will be accepted for presentation.
  • Procedures for college-wide competitions are entirely up to each college. The CSU system-wide competition calls for a written abstract of the research (no more than five pages, double-spaced). Students' work will be judged on the basis of the abstract and a 10-minute oral presentation.
  • It is the responsibility of the colleges to review the student proposals for technical quality. It is strongly recommended that colleges ask for as much information as needed to judge the merit of each student's research, scholarly or creative work. Colleges may wish to recognize their nominees through a prize or citation.
  • Faculty Advisors should encourage senior project students and graduate students to submit entries! Recent graduates (Spring 2012 and later) are also eligible.
  • Each College must submit its prioritized list of nominees by Thursday, February 21, 2013. Each application forwarded for university-wide review should consist of an electronic copy of the Student Delegate Registration Form (doc) and the abstract emailed to dahart@calpoly.edu, and one paper copy of the registration form and abstract delivered to the Research and Graduate Programs Office, Bldg. 38, Room 154.
  • On Saturday, March 2, 2013, the students selected by each college will present their work to a panel consisting of the Academic Senate Grants Review Committee and additional faculty referees. This event will be open to all interested persons. Faculty and students are encouraged to attend. The panel will evaluate both the oral and written presentations and select the delegates to the system-wide competition. The presentation room will have a video projector connected to a laptop computer. Students who wish to use the video projector should bring their presentation on a flash drive.
  • A maximum of 10 presentations will be selected to participate in the system-wide competition on May 10 and 11. The Office of Research and Graduate Programs will pay the costs of travel for those students selected for the system-wide competition. In addition, the CSU Student Research Competition will provide, at no cost to the student participants, their guests and mentors, a reception on Friday evening, May 10, and an awards luncheon on Saturday, May 11, 2013.
