Teaching Concentration in Kinesiology

Faculty

Flowchart

The teaching concentration in the Kinesiology Department is designed to prepare individuals to teach K - 12 physical education students through the integration of theory, practice, field experience, and service.  The undergraduate concentration is unique in its focus on extensive field experiences, practical application of current theory, laboratory experiences, and emphasis on technology. The curriculum is also focused on and directly aligned with the California standards for teachers. Courses are arranged sequentially and taken with peer cohorts in 6 quarter blocks. Each quarter teaching concentration students are immersed in theory based courses that reflect the "learn by doing" philosophy.

In their senior year, students will complete the field experience sequence which includes a strong laboratory component that directly links with course discussions and assignments from the previous year. All course instructors have taught in a variety of K-12 settings and can therefore augment class experiences with practical applications. Current educational technologies are incorporated into course delivery and assignments. Cal Poly is a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing approved program which means all graduates are certified to enroll in any credential program across the state.

Teaching Concentration Curriculum

Cal Poly's Teaching Concentration consists of 124 quarter units in major and teaching concentration classes. These courses are divided into two sections, Kinesiology Core Courses ( 66 quarter units ) and Teaching Concentration Courses ( 58 quarter units ). The matrix below illustrates this breakdown.

The Kinesiology Core ( 65 Units ) are courses taken by all Kinesiology students regardless of concentration or program focus. As such, students in Teaching Concentration are enrolled in these classes with students in the Exercise Science and Health Promotion Concentration and students with an Individualized Course of Study. Students in the Teaching Concentration also take classes in the Teaching Concentration, and these classes are restricted to individuals in that concentration.

Required Professional Activity Classes

Cal Poly Kinesiology students are required to take 6 units of professional activities. This requirement is met by students in Cal Poly's Teaching Concentration when they complete a required list of professional activities. It is necessary for those students to take specific classes in order to meet the requirements of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The courses that are required include:
