"A Night at the Mission" Chamber Concert

8 p.m. Mission San Luis Obispo

Several of Cal Poly's finest student music ensembles will perform traditional and contemporary chamber music in the Old Mission Church in San Luis Obispo.

“A Night at the Mission” will feature performances by a trombone choir, flute quartet, tuba quartet, saxophone ensemble, trombone quartet, brass quintet, saxophone quartet, trumpet ensemble, and clarinet ensemble.

The event is a fundraiser for the Cal Poly Band Program, whose members will travel to England, Ireland and Scotland for 12 days in June 2013. A concert band made up of 65 students from the Wind Ensemble, Wind Orchestra and Mustang Band will perform concerts throughout United Kingdom in such venues as Dublin's St. Patrick's Cathedral, The Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester, England), and St. John's Smith Square in London. The trip continues a long tradition of international band travel. Since 1975, there have been tours to Australia, Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, New Zealand and Switzerland.

Magic FluteStudent Opera Theatre Presents "The Magic Flute" with Opera San Luis Obispo

Thursday–Saturday, April 11–April 13, 2013
7:30 p.m. Spanos Theatre

The “co-opera” collaborative venture between Cal Poly’s Student Opera Theatre and Opera San Luis Obispo continues this year with a complete production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” Outstanding student singers in several key roles will perform side by side with internationally acclaimed opera singers. Student instrumental musicians will perform with OperaSLO’s professional orchestra.

This year the collaboration extends north to feature members of the Cuesta College North County Chorus under the direction of Cassandra Tarantino. Three performances will be sung in English with projected supertitles.

Jonah'sCal Poly's RSVP XVIII: Jonah’s

This marks the 18th season of this diverse transmedia series celebrating electro-acoustic diversity and compositional risk. This year's production tells an allegorical story based on one of the great institutions of Western culture. Set in a local bar, Jonah’s, the characters pass the centuries debating politics, religion, and most of all, the music playing on the juke box! The show promises innovative staging, a vast variety of music, wacky hats and RSVP’s continued dedication to the science of wonder.
