Two-year scholarships
Four two-year scholarships will be awarded to mathematics majors per year beginning with the 2007-2008 academic year and concluding with the 2009-2010 academic year. The two-year scholarships will be for the final year of the recipient’s undergraduate program at Cal Poly and their one-year credential program. The scholarships will be for $10,000 per year. Recipient's of two-year scholarships will be required to teach a minimum of 4 years in high-need school districts as defined below.

STEM scholarships
Three credential program scholarships will be awarded per year to STEM professionals who are committed to teaching mathematics in high need school districts. Awards will be made beginning with the 2007-2008 academic year and concluding with the 2010-2011 academic year. These awards will be made to current STEM professionals who wish to change careers or to recent graduates from STEM disciplines other than mathematics who wish to pursue a single subject credential in mathematics. Recipient's of STEM scholarships will be required to teach a minimum of 2 years in high-need school districts as defined below.

Scholarship Requirements
To meet the goals of the scholarship program recipients are required to teach two-years in a high need school district for each year of scholarship they receive. If the teaching requirement is not fulfilled within 6 years of receiving their credential scholars will be required to repay their scholarship to Cal Poly. The NSF defines high-need school districts as having at least one of the following,

  1. A school in which 50 percent of the students are eligible for participation in the free and reduced lunch program.
  2. A school in which 34 percent of the academic classroom teachers, at the secondary level, do not have a degree in the academic field in which they teach the largest percentage their classes.
  3. A school whose teacher attrition rate has been 15 percent or more over the last three school years.

High-need school districts are common in California and the directors of the program will assist scholarship recipients in finding jobs in these districts. The program directors will also help prepare recipients for their jobs in high need school districts through quarterly seminars and summer workshops.

Qualifications
Scholarships will be awarded to students entering their final undergraduate year or beginning the credential program at Cal Poly. Applications will be accepted from students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Priority may be given to qualified applicants who demonstrate financial need through submission of the FAFSA.
