IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR NEW CAL POLY INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
All course registration, access to library contents, “Blackboard” class assignments, grades, and a wealth of other information is conducted through the www.My.CalPoly.edu web portal. If you do not have a username or password to access the portal, contact Susan Tripp.
You should secure your own housing before you arrive in San Luis Obispo. Housing in San Luis Obispo is expensive and should be reserved early. On-campus housing reservations are made via the My.Calpoly.edu web portal. From the Housing Office web page you will see an ‘Off Campus’ link. There you will find a list of off-campus apartments. All of the apartments listed here are within easy walking distance to campus. You can contact the apartments directly to find out about their availability. To contact the housing office, you may e-mail them at housing@calpoly.edu. Plan to arrive in San Luis Obispo at least five days prior to the start of classes to get moved in. Secure housing as early as possible prior to arrival.
Prior to registering for classes, you must provide proof of health insurance or enroll in the CSU International Student Insurance plan. Please refer to the IEP web Health Insurance web page for information on the required health insurance criteria. If you wish to use your own insurance, please download, fill out, and fax or e-mail the Alternate Insurance Petition to Susan Tripp with proof of coverage and a copy of your policy written in English. Our fax number is (805) 756-5484. You may call or e-mail Susan with questions about health insurance at 805-756-7535 or sltripp@calpoly.edu.
A good resource to begin with is the Office of Academic Records web page. Click on the blue icon to find to a list of links to registration, housing, and other important information for new students. This is also available on the My.CalPoly.edu web portal. All students must register online for their own classes, and as a new student, you are eligible for New Student Registration your first time registering. Since it is very difficult to get classes at Cal Poly, we strongly recommend that you take advantage of priority registration in future terms. Students are allowed to register with priority three times. The Registration Rotation Schedule tells you when you will be allowed to register for the current term. Look up the first three letters of your last name under “New Students.” There is important information about Cal Poly registration and other issues in the Supporting Documentation web page. Please become familiar with these instructions and policies. Future rotations for upcoming terms can be found on this web page also, so you can plan when you wish to use your priority. On the Office of Academic Records web page please read the ‘New Student Registration Checklist’ and read the instructions for registration. Be sure to read announcements on the My.CalPoly login page as those change weekly and also have important information for new students.
You may plan your Fall schedule beginning June 2. Access the ‘Registration and Enrollment’ tab on My.CalPoly and click on the Plan a Student Schedule (PASS) link to plan a schedule of courses you would like to take. Click on the ‘Details’ link to get full course descriptions. In order to maintain visa status, all undergraduate (bachelor’s degree) students must enroll in least 12 units each quarter, and graduate (master’s degree) students must have at least 8 units of graduate (400 or 500 level) classes each quarter.
Registration for Fall Quarter begins on August 5th. Register for courses using the CP Reg link on the www.my.calpoly.edu web portal Registration & Enrollment tab. Enter the 4-digit class number for each desired class section. The class number is listed in the Plan a Schedule (PASS) web site. During the initial registration period you may register for up to 16 units. Later you may increase your enrollment to a maximum of 22 units, although you should not carry much more than 12 units per quarter during your first year at Cal Poly. You may add classes during the first week of instruction with special permission from the teaching staff. It is recommended to pre-register for your classes since it can be very difficult to add classes during the first week of school. Classes begin Sep 22 . Fee-paying students will be required to pay fees within 4 days of registering for classes. Be sure to pay fees by the fee payment deadlines. Fee payment can be done through My.CalPoly immediately after enrolling in classes. Exchange students are not required to pay registration fees, but they are subject to paying lab and materials fees.
Here are directions to find your way to campus either by air, train, bus, or car. Here is a campus map.
Plan to arrive at least 5 days prior to the start of classes. You must check in with the IEP office (38-108) when you arrive on campus. Bring your I-20 or DS-2019, your passport and I-94 card with you.
