The sponsors offer support for proposals to develop
high-impact, disruptive technologies for image-guided
interventions. As defined here, image-guided interventions
(IGI) integrate treatment with imaging technologies at the
point of patient care. The long-term goal of the IGI
initiative is to produce disruptive technologies that will
replace current treatments with minimally invasive,
image-guided interventions. A disruptive technology is a new
technological innovation that displaces the existing dominant
technology. Examples of disruptive technologies include
minimally invasive, image-guided procedures that replace
invasive surgery or low-cost image-guided interventions. This
program will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant

The sponsors invite applications from investigators willing
to participate in a cooperative research network designed to
reduce the incidence of hypoglycemia in children and young
adults. The Diabetes Research in Children Network (DirecNet)
currently consists of five academic centers selected from
among respondents to a previous announcement to support a
network focusing on glucose monitoring in children. This RFA
serves to expand the mission of DirecNet. The network will use
new tools to evaluate factors and mechanisms contributing to
hypoglycemia and will set up clinical trials to test novel
therapies, prevention strategies and devices designed to focus
on hypoglycemia prevention for individuals with type1
diabetes. It is anticipated that a maximum of five awards for
Clinical Centers (CCs) and one award for a Data Coordinating
Center (DCC) will be made. This program will use the NIH
Cooperative Clinical Research (U10) award mechanism for both
the DCC and the CCs. |

| Synopsis |
The sponsor offers support for research on chronic
orofacial pain disorders that will provide insights into the
pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these conditions and
the biological mechanisms underlying analgesic treatments of
these disorders. Two major goals of this funding opportunity
are: to stimulate research on patients with chronic painful
disorders; and to stimulate the development and utilization of
novel animal models of chronic orofacial pain conditions. As
an adjunct to these two goals, this Initiative also encourages
the development of novel measures of pain in patients and
animals that are non-invasive and objective and that permit a
behavioral or functional assessment of pain. The primary
outcome of this Initiative will be increased knowledge of the
biological mechanisms underlying chronic pain disorders,
nociception, and analgesic therapies. This program will use
the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant
mechanism. |
