Applicants may propose to develop full-scale sequencing systems, or to investigate key components of such systems. Such independent proposals are an important path for pursuing novel, high risk/high pay-off ideas. This program will use the NIH Phased Innovation (R21/R33) award mechanism.

Deadline Note
The deadline for receipt of optional letters of intent is October 25, 2006. The deadline for receipt of full applications is November 24, 2006.

Synopsis

The sponsor offers support for grant applications to develop novel technologies that will enable extremely low-cost DNA sequencing. Current technologies are able to produce the sequence of a mammalian-sized genome of the desired data quality for $5 to $10 million; the goal of this initiative is to reduce costs by at least four orders of magnitude, so that a mammalian-sized genome could be sequenced for approximately $1000. Applicants may propose to develop full-scale sequencing systems, or to investigate key components of such systems. Such independent proposals are an important path for pursuing novel, high risk/high pay-off ideas. This program will use the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) mechanism.
